A voter referendum that would allow D.C. residents to support becoming the 51st state in the Nov. 8 election took another step forward Tuesday.
The D.C. Council’s unanimous approval of the referendum, which is championed by Mayor Muriel Bowser, means that the 13-member council has approved language to submit to the D.C. Board of Elections for certification, according to the Washington City Paper.
The submitted referendum asks voters four questions: 1) Should the District become a state called New Columbia; 2) Whether voters approve a constitution for the new state “to be adopted by the council”; 3) Whether voters approve the state’s boundaries as adopted by the New Columbia Statehood Commission on June 13; 4) Whether voters would support an elected representative form of government.
