The District’s sports betting program is performing poorly compared to efforts in similarly sized states and the city urgently needs to make a series of changes to help it recover, according to a new report from D.C.’s independent auditor.
The analysis, released Thursday, confirms many of the problems bettors, politicians and industry observers have identified with the city-run wagering system since it launched in earnest last year — namely, that sports betting revenue has fallen far short of projections, largely stemming from problems with the city’s processes. Auditor Kathy Patterson and her staff found that everything from unfavorable odds for bettors to problems with GambetDC (the city’s mobile betting app) to issues with the city’s regulatory structure were to blame for the shortfall.
“Overall, the future success of GambetDC will be tied not just to the strength of the District’s recovery from the pandemic but also to the steps the [Office of Lottery and Gaming] takes to increase sports wagering revenue,” the auditors wrote.
