Despite pushing back plans to demolish RFK Stadium, the Events D.C. board of directors has selected the contractor who would eventually carry it out.
Providence, Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Company, which has an office in the District, was awarded a $14,222,915 contract with a total project budget of $20 million after a Thursday vote by the board of directors of Events D.C., the conventions and sports authority that manages the stadium.
The company will be responsible for all labor, materials and equipment required for the project, said John Boardman, chairman of the board’s strategic initiatives and sports and entertainment committee. Approximately 40% of the work will be completed by certified small business enterprises, according to a release from Events D.C.
Starting in October, the objective is to proceed with demolition planning, regulatory approvals and selective pre-construction work. Once the work begins, Gilbane will be responsible for “abatement, selective demolition, super structure demolition, cutting/capping of utility infrastructure, removal and disposal of all debris, and filling and grading the site,” the release notes.
