Bowie State University has signed on to sponsor two new PBS documentaries — making it the first historically Black university to be a premier sponsor of a national PBS film.
Terms of the sponsorship deals were not disclosed.
The one-hour films Bowie State is sponsoring — “Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom” and “Becoming Frederick Douglass” — will debut in October on Maryland Public Television as well as national PBS stations and streaming outlets. Both films are directed by Stanley Nelson, an Emmy-winning documentarian whose 2021 film “Attica” was nominated for an Academy Award, and Nicole London.
“We are proud to boldly step up to partner with Maryland Public Television to help bring forward fresh perspectives on the influence of these two powerful champions of freedom that continue to resonate in today’s dialogue on social justice,” Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux said in a statement. Tubman and Douglass were both born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
