Baltimore needs to add 16,000 new housing units in order to help the city recapture its 2010 population level, a Live Baltimore official said on Thursday.
Annie Milli, executive director of the nonprofit, said adding new housing stock like more luxury and affordable apartments, townhouses and single-family homes could attract more residents and help reverse years of decline.
The city took another hit last week when 2020 Census figures showed Baltimore has lost 35,253 residents since 2010. Milli said the latest census was a “call to action” to help Baltimore reverse seven decades of population loss. The city population “peaked” at 949,708 in 1950, Live Baltimore said last week.
Milli said the city has the potential to increase its housing options in targeted neighborhoods by 5,300 to 7,100 units each year for the next five years.
