Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos appears to be getting in the game for the Washington Commanders after all.
According to The Washington Post and ESPN, Bezos has hired investment firm Allen & Co. to examine the possibility of a bid for Washington’s NFL franchise. The New York-based firm was involved in recent sales of the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers, and the Lerner family retained Allen & Co. last year to explore its potential sale of the Washington Nationals.
Dan and Tanya Snyder, the current co-owners of the Commanders, said in November they had retained a Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) affiliate to “consider potential transactions” related to the team — including a sale of minority stakes or an all-out sale.
Several bids were made for the franchise at a late-December deadline, according to the reports, but Bezos did not submit one. The executive chairman of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post had previously expressed interest in making a play for the team, including potentially getting music mogul Jay-Z involved in his bid.
