Amazon is laying off 353 workers and closing two suburban Baltimore logistics centers as part of a national cost-cutting move.
The closures, effective Oct. 25, mark an abrupt reversal of Amazon’s aggressive growth strategy that included seemingly unlimited hiring sprees over the past decade.
The internet retailing giant filed a pair of layoff notices Aug. 26 with the state in a move that mirrors Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) layoffs in other U.S. cities this year. Workers at the two logistics centers will be offered jobs at other Amazon facilities located within a 10-mile radius of the shuttered facilities, an Amazon spokesperson said.
The layoffs will close two last-mile delivery stations and impact 190 workers at 7458 New Ridge Road in Hanover and 163 workers at 8411 Kelson Drive in Essex, according to a state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, report posted on the website of the Maryland Department of Labor. The WARN log is an online notification system for layoffs and job terminations across the state.
