Amazon has officially abandoned its plans for a new distribution center in Gaithersburg — and that’s prompting the company’s former development partner to pivot on the property the tech giant once coveted.
The tech giant had envisioned a 200,000-square-foot warehouse at a 44-are site in the city, but an Amazon spokesperson, city officials and property owner the Matan Cos. all confirmed that plans have changed.
“It’s common for us to explore multiple locations simultaneously and adjust timetables based on needs across the network,” Amazon spokeswoman Rachael Lighty wrote in a statement. “We have decided not to pursue a location in Gaithersburg at this time, although we continue to explore opportunities to invest and grow across the state and the region.”
The tech firm ran into intense opposition among Gaithersburg officials, with many concerned that a large warehouse would not be the best use for the former Leidos campus near the Lakeforest Mall.
