Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks is pushing back at those claiming she is cutting funding for public schools.
“The school system continues to receive 62% of our entire budget and this year the investment is higher,” said Alsobrooks. “They got an increase overall in the overall amount that the school system got last year.”
Alsobrooks is directly contradicting the man she personally chose to run the school system.

Millard House II has been on the job as Prince George’s County Public Schools Superintendent since last July. What has angered Alsobrooks now is what House told state lawmakers Alsobrooks is pulling money back. During a virtual meeting on Feb. 7, he said he is facing, “A $64 million cut and that would be catastrophic.”
“The fact of the matter is this, the school system is getting additional money above what they got last year to the tune of $53 million,” Alsobrooks is now saying in response.
What led to the war of words was a request by Alsobrooks for a change in state law. The proposed law would allow Alsobrooks to count revenue from two tax streams, which must go to schools, but aren’t currently allowed to count as part of the county’s mandatory contribution to schools required by The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future — a massive state education spending plan.
