Prince George’s County will hire 150 new firefighters in 2025 as part of its staffing reallocation plan, according to Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and Fire Chief Tiffany Green.
The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department officials say they’re currently operating 251 career firefighters short of a full staff. The vacancies, in addition to vacation leave requested by current employees, are expected to cost taxpayers over $30 million in overtime expenses this year, according to Alsobrooks.
The 150 new roles is the highest number of positions budgeted for in 20 years. However, they still have a long way to go before reaching their goal of 1,224 firefighters.
On June 30, Chief Green will pull career firefighters from their current stations and relocate them in an attempt to fight fatigue and burnout.
