A D.C. lawmaker is proposing a novel way to keep the Washington Capitals and Wizards from relocating to Virginia: Let them run their own sports betting apps.
As part of a broader bill aimed at increasing competition for mobile sports gambling in the District., D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, I-At Large, has proposed creating a new type of betting license that would allow all of the city’s professional teams to run their own sports betting apps in partnership with an established sportsbook of their own choosing.
McDuffie, who introduced the legislation Tuesday, told The Washington Post, that the newly created license would serve as an incentive for the Capitals, Wizards and the city’s other professional teams to remain in the District, while creating more mobile betting options for District residents.
“The general idea [that] we need more competition in our city sports wagering program is something I support, and I think others will support as well,” McDuffie said. “And it’s what our consumers have been demanding.”
