From the District of Columbia and Maryland to Virginia, 7News is finding out how much taxpayers are on the hook for sports stadiums, fields and arenas across the DMV.
D.C.’s debt on Nationals Park is $149 million, according to the city. And the District has an outstanding debt on Capital One Arena of more than $34.6 million.
Taxpayers have been on the hook for some time.
In the 1990s, taxpayers foot the bill for the predevelopment of Capital One Arena costing more than $61.5 million at the time. Then in 2007, taxpayers paid for a $50 million renovation of Capital One Arena.
The Washington Wizards and the Capitals are looking to leave the D.C. arena to build a new arena in Alexandria, Va., despite D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s $500 million offer to keep the teams.
