Five years and a month after choosing Arlington County as the home of its second headquarters, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) has secured its place as the county’s top private employer, leapfrogging a pair of mainstays.
The e-commerce and cloud computing giant, which established HQ2 in existing Crystal City office buildings before opening its first two HQ2 towers in June, is now listed just behind the federal government at No. 1 and the county government and Arlington Public Schools at No. 2, according to Arlington’s recently released Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for fiscal year 2023, a yearly, three-part deep dive into the county’s finances.
HQ2’s headcount continues to stand at 8,000, an Amazon spokesperson said Tuesday. It has not changed since June, when the ribbon was officially cut on Metropolitan Park’s two, 22-story high-rises, 50,000 square feet of retail and community park.
With the move up, Amazon bumps Big Four accounting firm Deloitte to No. 4 and technology giant Accenture to No. 5 — Accenture was third and Deloitte fourth in fiscal 2022, according to the ACFR. The two firms had held the top private employer spots for at least a decade. The ACFR does not provide a headcount for any company in the top 10.
