Whole Foods Market Inc. plans to shutter a major distribution center in Prince George’s County amid global economic headwinds.
The Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) subsidiary filed a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice with Maryland’s labor department on Tuesday about plans to shut down its Mid-Atlantic Seafood Facility in Landover. The plant closure, slated to take effect May 23, will impact 65 employees, according to that notice and a company spokesperson. The company’s lease of 1513-1521 Cabin Branch Drive, at 45,300 square feet, was the largest suburban Maryland industrial deal in the fourth quarter of 2019, per Cushman & Wakefield.
The WARN notice landed a day after Amazon disclosed plans to eliminate about 9,000 roles. At the same time, a company spokesperson said decision was unrelated to those Amazon layoffs and that Whole Foods decided to close the Landover plant due to a change in how the market chain meets demand for its seafood products.
