Each state lottery decides how its profits are used. In Virginia 100-percent of profits go to public education. DC and Maryland put their profits into their general fund, which supports a variety of essential services.
In fiscal year 2021 Virginia public schools received 766 million dollars from lottery profits. Maryland’s general fund got 667 million dollars. DC’s general fund received 48 million dollars.
The big winners in education in Northern Virginia – Prince William, Fairfax, and Loudoun counties. Combined, those counties landed more than 100 million dollars last fiscal year. Lottery ticket buyers we spoke with in Virginia were thrilled to hear schools are reaping such significant benefits.
