A major mixed-use redevelopment dubbed National View in Forest Heights, adjacent to National Harbor and the subject of some debate, got a green light from a gatekeeper agency at an important juncture in the entitlement process.
Owner and applicant Harbor View Development LLC, of which D.C.’s Petra Development is the controlling partner, filed plans for seven buildings, including up to nearly 1,900 multifamily residential units and 289,000 square feet of office, commercial and retail. The site sits on 20 vacant acres just north of National Harbor. The Prince George’s County Planning Board, a quasi-judicial body that oversees the county’s planning and parks and rec functions, approved the plan Thursday.
The project would serve as “the second anchor,” next to National Harbor, at “the gateway into Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland” for highway travelers, Eli Borek, Petra’s chief development officer, said in an email Tuesday. State Sen. Obie Patterson, D-Prince George’s, called the project “an economic shot in the arm” in a May 20 letter to the planning board.
