Some significant changes are in store for Greater Washington’s largest shopping mall as the owner of Tysons Corner Center seeks to allow for more car sales — and prepares to raze one of the shuttered department stores — at the property.
Affiliates of The Macerich Co. (NYSE: MAC) filed plans in mid-June to carve out sections of parking around the perimeter of its 77.6-acre campus for use as “urban auto dealerships,” as Macerich designates them. The owner is asking the county to allow auto sales on the site since that use is not permitted under the retail center’s previously approved development plans — and “urban auto dealerships” is not a separate category of use in Fairfax’s zoning code.
As proposed, the mall owner would set aside no more than 240 dedicated spaces — 30 each for up to eight tenants. One of the urban dealerships would be located along Leesburg Pike just beyond the Bloomingdale’s and east of International Drive, per plans prepared by project engineer Vika Virginia LLC. Others are located in locations west, north and east of the mall.
