Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed into law Tuesday a bill establishing a framework for legalized sports betting in the state — though it remains unclear how long it will be before the program gets off the ground.
The law gives in-person licenses to Maryland’s six casinos — including MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County, which has already started planning its sportsbook — as well as FedEx Field, home of the Washington Football Team, and the Baltimore stadiums for the Orioles and Ravens. It also grants licenses to the horse-racing tracks Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course.
The legislation allows for up to 30 additional in-person betting licenses, eyed for off-track betting facilities and other similar outfits, as well as 60 licenses for online sports betting apps. Maryland will create a commission to administer a licensing program.
