Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said Wednesday she plans to use some of the $1.6 billion the county is receiving from the state this year to invest in the area around FedEx Field in Landover — with hopes of luring a bigger presence from the Washington Football Team.
According to DCist, Alsobrooks said the county is “preparing to fight” and pitch the team on staying in Prince George’s County with a year-round sports and entertainment destination that will include restaurants and shopping, according to the report. She hopes the effort will convince the team to place a new practice facility and corporate headquarters around FedEx Field, according to the report.
Alsobrooks indicated the plan includes $17.6 million in infrastructure improvements along the Blue Line corridor — a relatively small sum, all things considered — to prime the area, according to the report. Other planned investments with the state funding include $24 million for renovating Prince George’s Community College, $11 million for a new amphitheater in Largo and efforts to address disparities in health care, housing and employment, according to the report. The county is receiving about $35 million more in state funding than it did in 2020.
