The National Capital Planning Commission is scheduled to consider plans next month for a new money-making plant in Prince George’s County to replace the aging Bureau of Engraving and Printing facility in downtown D.C.
The new facility at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, slated to cost around $800 million, would be sleeker and of more modern architecture than the Treasury Department agency’s plant at 301 14th St. SW. Instead of a Greek Revival building dating back to 1914, the new, 1 million-square-foot structure would be built of metal and glass, with panels on all four sides designed to reflect the pastoral setting of its surroundings.
Architectural giant Skidmore, Owings & Merrill was selected in December to design the facility. Its “Capital Currency Team” also includes industrial engineer Ghafari Associates and MEP engineer Huitt Zollars.
