MGM National Harbor has once again furloughed employees after tightened coronavirus restrictions forced the closure of the casino’s restaurants and reduced its capacity.
The company filed Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications Jan. 6 with the Maryland Department of Labor that affected 518 employees. Of those, 368 were furloughed and the remainder had their hours reduced.
Prince George’s County banned indoor dining and restricted other businesses starting Dec. 16 — the same effective date of MGM’s WARN notices. Among the restrictions was reducing casino capacity to 25%. MGM was previously allowed to have 50% of its usual capacity in the facility.
“Unfortunately, these restrictions, as well as the overall impact of the pandemic on business, has resulted in a reduction in staffing levels and hours,” an MGM spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We are focused on bringing employees back to work when business levels recover.”
