Giant Food will introduce new shelf labels in January for some 3,100 products sold in its stores that come from minority-owned businesses, the region’s largest grocer announced this week.
Landover-based Giant said the new labels, to be present in all 164 stores, will identify products from 218 businesses across its network — all women, Black, Asian-Indian, Asian-Pacific, Hispanic, LGBT, or Veteran-owned.
“We’re committed to making it easier for customers to identify product attributes that are important to them by fostering a diverse and inclusive network of suppliers that reflects the unique backgrounds and experiences of our Giant family, our customers and our communities,” Ira Kress, Giant Food president, said in a statement.
The labels will also be featured on the Giant website and its mobile app, for customers who shop online. The company also plans to highlight its diverse vendors “through storytelling and product spotlights” on its website.
