The spread of Covid-19 has forced people across Greater Washington to stay home — and that has meant less speed camera and red light camera revenue for the District.
The District expects fines and forfeits issued in fiscal year 2020 to total about $148 million — the vast majority of which comes from its network of speed and red light cameras — down from the $174 million originally anticipated by the office of the Chief Financial Officer, according to revenue estimates released by the office. Fiscal Year 2020 ended Sept. 30.
That revenue shortfall contributes to a larger budget gap the District has to make up, both in 2020 and in later years. In 2019, total fines and fee revenue was about $194 million. We wrote about the larger budget shortfall Sept. 30.
