Passenger traffic at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has fallen 56% this year and the Maryland Aviation Administration is cutting $18 million from its operating budget while delaying several hundred million dollars’ worth of capital projects.
Despite those gloomy numbers, other airports are faring even worse in the wake of the the Covid-19 pandemic. Normally the 22nd-busiest airport, BWI has risen to 11th and currently accounts for more than 50% of all passenger traffic in the Baltimore-Washington region. In June and July, BWI transported more passengers than Reagan National and Dulles International airports combined.
Given the stark reality facing airports across the U.S., Executive Director Ricky Smith considers BWI to be somewhat fortunate.
