The legislation, which outlines a proposed partnership with George Washington University Hospital majority owner Universal Health Services Inc. (NYSE: UHS) to run a new community hospital on the St. Elizabeths East campus, earned unanimous approval from the D.C. Council’s health committee Wednesday.
That quick vote came after a nine-hour public hearing Tuesday on plans for both the new St. E’s hospital and for a new hospital on Howard University’s campus in Northwest D.C. — which has not yet had a vote.
Both projects would serve some of the city’s most vulnerable residents, many of whom suffer from chronic health conditions and lack access to services. The coronavirus pandemic has both exacerbated the disparity and brought much-needed attention to the need for an integrated health system east of the Anacostia River — where the St. E’s hospital would open in 2024, and whose residents Howard already serves.
