Businesses in the District are not as worried about the $15 minimum wage approved by the D.C. Council Tuesday as they are about the overall costs of a series of bills that could quickly add up for employers.
Councilmembers voted unanimously to increase the minimum wage from $10.50 to the new $15 an hour benchmark by 2020, and the tipped minimum wage from $2.77 to $5 an hour. After 2020, both wages will be tied to inflation.
Tuesday’s vote will be followed by another vote at the end of the month and Mayor Muriel Bowser has said she supports the move. She called the legislation “a big step forward.”
