The curtain may soon fall on a luxury movie theater in North Bethesda.
IPIC Theaters, the Florida-based cinema operator known for pairing first-run films with craft cocktails and full-service, in-seat dining, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and issued layoff notices at all of its locations — including its theater at Pike & Rose.
The North Bethesda theater and its affiliated restaurant at 11830 Grand Park Ave. remain open for now. However, the location is at risk of closing if the company is unable to secure a buyer for its assets by April 28, according to a report by MoCo Show, which cited a company representative.
IPIC has notified 116 employees at its Maryland location of potential job losses, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, filed Monday with the Maryland Department of Labor. WARN notices are required when employers anticipate significant layoffs or closures.
The Pike & Rose theater has been a centerpiece of the North Bethesda mixed-use development, offering premium reclining seats, chef-driven menu options and an upscale bar experience designed to compete with traditional theaters and streaming services alike. IPIC has marketed itself as a higher-end alternative to standard multiplexes, blending hospitality and entertainment in a single venue.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows a company to reorganize its debts while continuing to operate, but it also opens the door to asset sales. If a buyer does not emerge by the late-April deadline, the North Bethesda theater could shutter along with other IPIC locations nationwide.
The potential closure would mark another challenge for brick-and-mortar entertainment venues still navigating shifting consumer habits and ongoing competition from at-home streaming platforms.
