Steny Hoyer, the longtime Maryland Democrat and former No. 2 leader in the U.S. House, is set to announce his retirement from Congress, according to two sources familiar with his plans who spoke with ABC News.
Hoyer is expected to formally announce that he will not seek reelection during remarks on the House floor at 10 a.m. Thursday.
First elected to Congress in 1981, Hoyer has represented Maryland for more than four decades and is one of the longest-serving members of the House.
The veteran lawmaker also confirmed his decision in a wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post, saying he plans to step away after his extensive career.
