Howard Community College is erecting a new $102 million building on its Columbia campus to replace a pair of aging facilities.

The college recently broke ground on its new Mathematics and Athletics Complex. Construction on the “fused” facility, which will serve as a home to the school’s math and athletics programs, will begin later this summer and is expected to conclude in fall 2024. Kathleen Hetherington, president of Howard Community College, said the building will add new value to the Howard County campus and two of its major programs.

Hetherington said the college initially planned to construct both a new math and new athletics complex. The school’s math programs are currently housed in a former office building constructed in the 1970s, and the existing athletics and fitness center was built in 1969.

The new building will address space and flexibility challenges of the old facilities. Hetherington said officials decided to fuse the projects because it would allow the school to replace both facilities more quickly, and would also be more cost-efficient.
