Maryland transportation officials have named Shannetta Griffin as the state’s top aviation administrator, tasked with overseeing BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, the busiest airport in the metro Washington, D.C., area and the biggest East Coast hub for Southwest Airlines.
As the executive director and CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration, Griffin will also oversee Martin State Airport in Middle River and the state’s regional aviation assistance program.
Griffin, who was a top Federal Aviation Administration official from 2021 until earlier this year, began working in her new role on Monday.
She replaced Ricky Smith, who recently departed after 10 years in the position to become the general manager of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — one of the busiest in the world.
