The Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee unanimously chose Derrick Coley on Monday to fill a soon-to-be vacant seat to represent District 24 in the Maryland House of Delegates.
The nearly two-hour public hearing in Lanham was almost standing-room-only, as the crowd heard pitches form four delegates, then waited to hear all 25 committee members vote for Coley, who’s been a member of the committee.
Coley, 51, thanked family members, friends and supporters, some of whom sported buttons with his name and picture on them. He also thanked the three other candidates who appeared Monday.
“I want to say thank you for allowing me to serve almost 12 years … among you pushing democratic principles throughout this county and throughout the great state of Maryland,” he said. “Let’s get to work.”
Coley, who started work this past summer as a deputy director in the county’s Department of the Environment, had two people speak on his behalf: Former Glenarden Mayor Obie Pinckney and County Executive Aisha Braveboy (D).
