On Wednesday, the D.C. Council’s Committee on Transportation and the Environment moved forward with a plan to further crack down on out-of-state drivers who rack up huge traffic fines and never pay them.
The DC Attorney General’s Office is already using authority granted to it last year to sue Maryland and Virginia drivers to try to get money they owe from traffic tickets, most of which stem from traffic enforcement cameras such as speed cameras or red light cameras. The AG’s office announced four more lawsuits against out-of-state drivers on Tuesday, bringing the total suits it has brought this year to 12.
The Transportation Committee wants to add $7.1 million to next fiscal year’s budget, which would, among other things, fund:
* The creation of a “points system” for dangerous drivers, giving more points to the most frequent and most serious offenders, and prioritizing their cars for booting and towing.
*Brief safety classes that drivers of vehicles that have huge fines on them would have to take before they could get their car back.
