Maryland Gov. Wes Moore brought promising news for western Maryland after his recent trip to Japan.
More than 400 direct jobs and another 1,300 spinoff jobs are in the works at Hitachi Rail in Hagerstown — an area factory nearing completion of construction.
Moore just returned from his Far East trip, where he met with Hitachi executives about their $70 million investment to make rail cars for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
“Hitachi has been a wonderful partner for us in the State of Maryland, specifically western Maryland,” said the governor at a State House briefing on Wednesday. “When I met with them in Japan, I not only thanked them but explored with them further expansion plans.”
Along with Metro in the D.C. area, Hitachi is also building rail cars for the Maryland Transit Authority (MTA).
Hitachi’s first order to WMATA is 256 rail cars, followed by 20 new rail cars per month.
